RESUMO

Background: Limited research has been conducted on the influence of autophagy-associated long non-coding RNAs (ARLncRNAs) on the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: We analyzed 371 HCC samples from TCGA, identifying expression networks of ARLncRNAs using autophagy-related genes. Screening for prognostically relevant ARLncRNAs involved univariate Cox regression, Lasso regression, and multivariate Cox regression. A Nomogram was further employed to assess the reliability of Riskscore, calculated from the signatures of screened ARLncRNAs, in predicting outcomes. Additionally, we compared drug sensitivities in patient groups with differing risk levels and investigated potential biological pathways through enrichment analysis, using consensus clustering to identify subgroups related to ARLncRNAs. Results: The screening process identified 27 ARLncRNAs, with 13 being associated with HCC prognosis. Consequently, a set of signatures comprising 8 ARLncRNAs was successfully constructed as independent prognostic factors for HCC. Patients in the high-risk group showed very poor prognoses in most clinical categories. The Riskscore was closely related to immune cell scores, such as macrophages, and the DEGs between different groups were implicated in metabolism, cell cycle, and mitotic processes. Notably, high-risk group patients demonstrated a significantly lower IC50 for Paclitaxel, suggesting that Paclitaxel could be an ideal treatment for those at elevated risk for HCC. We further identified C2 as the Paclitaxel subtype, where patients exhibited higher Riskscores, reduced survival rates, and more severe clinical progression. Conclusion: The 8 signatures based on ARLncRNAs present novel targets for prognostic prediction in HCC. The drug candidate Paclitaxel may effectively treat HCC by impacting ARLncRNAs expression. With the identification of ARLncRNAs-related isoforms, these results provide valuable insights for clinical exploration of autophagy mechanisms in HCC pathogenesis and offer potential avenues for precision medicine.

RESUMO

Developing scalable vascularized and innervated tissue is a critical challenge for the successful clinical application of tissue-engineered constructs. Collagen hydrogels are extensively utilized in cell-mediated vascular network formation because of their naturally excellent biological properties. However, the substantial increase in hydrogel contraction induced by populated cells limits their long-term use. Previous studies attempted to mitigate this issue by concentrating collagen pre-polymer solutions or synthesizing covalently crosslinked collagen hydrogels. However, these methods only partially reduce hydrogel contraction while hindering blood vessel formation within the hydrogels. To address this challenge, we introduced additional support in the form of a supportive spacer to counteract the contraction forces of populated cells and prevent hydrogel contraction. This approach was found to promote cell spreading, resist hydrogel contraction, control hydrogel/tissue geometry, and even facilitate the engineering of functional blood vessels and host nerve growth in just one week. Subsequently, implanting these engineered tissues into muscle defect sites resulted in timely anastomosis with the host vasculature, leading to enhanced myogenesis, increased muscle innervation, and the restoration of injured muscle functionality. Overall, this innovative strategy expands the applicability of collagen hydrogels in fabricating large vascularized nerve tissue constructs for repairing volumetric muscle loss (∼63 %) and restoring muscle function.

RESUMO

Home- and community-based services (HCBS) may contribute to lowering mortality and enhancing quality of life among older adults. Limited research, however, has examined this relationship in the Chinese context. This study explored the longitudinal association between perceived availability of HCBS and all-cause mortality among Chinese older adults. This cohort study included 8,102 individuals aged 65 years and older from the 2011, 2014, and 2018 waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey. HCBS included daily life assistance, medical care services, emotional support and social services, and reconciliation and legal aid services. The association between perceived availability of HCBS and all-cause mortality was investigated using Cox proportional hazards models. Emotional support and social services were negatively associated with all-cause mortality (HR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.78 ~ 0.95, P = .004). Daily life assistance, medical care services, and reconciliation and legal aid services were not significantly associated with all-cause mortality. Providing community-level emotional support and social services may reduce the risk of death. Focusing on the mental health and social well-being of older adults is just as important as caring for their physical health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long-term care facilities (LTCFs) were high-risk settings for COVID-19 outbreaks. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on LTCFs, including rates of infection, hospitalisation, case fatality, and mortality, and to determine the association between control measures and SARS-CoV-2 infection rates in residents and staff. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search of six databases for articles published between December 2019 and 5 November 2021, and performed meta-analyses and subgroup analyses to identify the impact of COVID-19 on LTCFs and the association between control measures and infection rate. RESULTS: We included 108 studies from 19 countries. These studies included 1,902,044 residents and 255,498 staff from 81,572 LTCFs, among whom 296,024 residents and 36,807 staff were confirmed SARS-CoV-2 positive. The pooled infection rate was 32.63% (95%CI: 30.29 ~ 34.96%) for residents, whereas it was 10.33% (95%CI: 9.46 ~ 11.21%) for staff. In LTCFs that cancelled visits, new patient admissions, communal dining and group activities, and vaccinations, infection rates in residents and staff were lower than the global rate. We reported the residents' hospitalisation rate to be 29.09% (95%CI: 25.73 ~ 32.46%), with a case-fatality rate of 22.71% (95%CI: 21.31 ~ 24.11%) and mortality rate of 15.81% (95%CI: 14.32 ~ 17.30%). Significant publication biases were observed in the residents' case-fatality rate and the staff infection rate, but not in the infection, hospitalisation, or mortality rate of residents. CONCLUSION: SARS-CoV-2 infection rates would be very high among LTCF residents and staff without appropriate control measures. Cancelling visits, communal dining and group activities, restricting new admissions, and increasing vaccination would significantly reduce the infection rates.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The one-child policy has existed in China for more than 30 years. It brought benefits to the country's economic development and reduced the magnitude of the population within a short period. However, it has led to the emergence of a significant number of parents who have lost their only child, referred to as shiduers (). This study explored the symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) among shiduers and their relationship with the social support shiduers received after they lost the child, specifically accounting for the disparity between rural and urban areas. METHOD: In total, 405 participants were recruited with a mean age of 60.37 years (SD = 7.78). Around 68.75% were female, and 58.66% were urban shiduers. They were asked to complete a series of self-reported questionnaires, including demographic information, the Social Support Rate Scale, and the Prolonged Grief-13. RESULTS: First, 29.63% of the participants (N = 120) fulfilled the International Classification of Diseases (11th rev.) diagnostic criteria for PGD symptoms; second, PGD symptoms of shiduers were negatively related to social support, including objective support, subjective support, and the availability of support; and third, urban/rural location moderated the effect of objective support on the PGD symptoms of shiduers, but not the effect of subjective support on PGD symptoms. Furthermore, the simple-slope tests indicated that the shiduers in rural areas benefited most from objective support. CONCLUSIONS: The present results revealed high rates of PGD symptoms in Chinese shiduers, and our findings highlight the important role of urban/rural location in the relationship between social support and PGD symptoms. RESUMO

Brucellosis, caused by Brucella species, is an infectious disease transmitted through contact with infected animals or their secretions. The clinical disease is characterized by fever and headache. Relative bradycardia is an inappropriate response of heart rate to body temperature, in which the heart rate does not increase proportionally despite a high fever. In this report, we document one case of Brucella melitensis infection demonstrating relative bradycardia. To our knowledge, this is the first report of relative bradycardia in a patient with brucellosis.

RESUMO

Few studies have assessed the association between perceived availability of home- and community-based services (HCBSs) and self-reported depression among Chinese older adults, which the present study attempts to rectify. This cross-sectional study enrolled 11,941 participants aged 65 and older from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey 2018 wave. The 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10) was used to evaluate depression, and perceived availability was measured for four categories of HCBSs: daily life assistance, medical care services, emotional support and social services, and other. These four categories and the number of services in each were used to represent the perceived availability of service provision. Binary logistic models were used to explore the relationship between perceived availability of HCBSs and depression in older adults. Perceived daily life assistance was found to be negatively associated with depression symptoms among Chinese older adults in both urban and rural areas [rural: OR (95%CI) = 0.66 (0.55-0.78), p < 0.001; urban: OR (95% CI) = 0.69(0.60-0.79), p < 0.001], while perceived levels of medical care services, emotional support and social services, and other were not associated with depression symptoms in rural or urban areas. Our primary finding was that providing daily life assistance at the community level may help to meet more older adults' daily needs, thus potentially decreasing the risk of depression.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Self-rated health (SRH) is a good predictor of morbidity and mortality. Extensive research has shown that females generally report poorer SRH than males but still tend to live longer. Previous studies used cross-sectional or pooled data for their analyses while ignoring the dynamic changes in males' and females' SRH statuses over time. Furthermore, longitudinal studies, especially those that focus on older adults, typically suffer from the incompleteness of data. As such, the effect of dropout data on the trajectories of SRH is still unknown. Our objective is to examine whether there are any gender differences in the trajectories of SRH statuses in Chinese older adults. METHODS: The trajectories of SRH were estimated using the pattern-mixture model (PMM), a special latent growth model, under non-ignorable dropout data assumption. We analyzed the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) data of 15,613 older adults aged 65 years and above, collected from 2005 to 2014. RESULTS: The results demonstrated the effect of non-ignorable dropout data assumptions in this study. The previous SRH score was negatively associated with the likelihood of dropping out of the study at the next follow-up survey. Our results showed that both males and females in China perceive their SRH as decreasing over time. A significant gender difference was found in the average SRH score (female SRH was lower than male SRH) in this study. Nonetheless, based on the results obtained using the PMM, there are no gender differences in the trajectories of SRH at baseline as well as in the rate of decline among the total sample. The results also show that males and females respond to SRH predictors similarly, except that current drinking has a more pronounced positive effect on males and healthcare accessibility has a more pronounced positive effect on females. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that missing data have an impact on the trajectory of SRH among Chinese older adults. Under the non-ignorable dropout data assumptions, no gender differences were found in trajectories of SRH among Chinese older adults. Males and females respond to SRH predictors similarly, except for current drinking habit and healthcare accessibility.

RESUMO

Few studies have assessed the impact of home and community-based services (HCBSs) provision on cognitive function among older adults over time. This study examined the longitudinal association between HCBSs provision and cognitive function in Chinese older adults. The study included 5,134 participants aged 65 years and older in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 2008 to 2014. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to evaluate cognitive function over the same time period. Participants were asked what kind of HCBSs were provided in his or her community. However, they were not asked whether services were utilised. The study used the number of HCBSs provided each wave to represent the strength of HCBSs, and used the MMSE score of each wave to represent the older adults' cognitive function status. A latent growth model was used to explore the relationship between HCBSs provision and cognitive function of older adults. The number of HCBSs provided was positively associated with older adults' cognitive function (2008: ß = 0.03, p = 0.031; 2011: ß = 0.06, p < 0.001; 2014: ß = 0.06, p < 0.001) after controlling for gender, age, residence, education, income, medical insurance, activities of daily living disability, instrumental activities of daily living disability, serious illness, living arrangement and marital status. Results provided longitudinal evidence that an increase in HCBSs provision at a national level can result in better cognitive function in Chinese older adults.

RESUMO

Vascular complications are the important pathophysiologic manifestations of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and many long non-coding RNAs (LncRNAs) are involved in this process. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationships among LncRNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1), microRNA-361-3p (miR-361-3p), and suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) in high glucose (HG)-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) injury and its underlying mechanism. We found that HG treatment significantly promotes MALAT1 and SOCS3 expressions, but inhibits miR-361-3p expression in HUVECs. Furthermore, through bioinformatics analysis and dual luciferase assay, we found that MALAT1 directly sponges miR-361-3p to counteract its suppression on SOCS3 expression. Moreover, knockdown of MALAT1 evidently inhibits HG-induced inflammatory factors, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) and IL-6 expressions in HUVECs (and HUVEC apoptosis) by regulating the miR-361-3p/SOCS3 axis. In conclusion, our results indicate that knockdown of MALAT1 inhibits HG-induced vascular endothelial injury through regulating miR-361-3p/SOCS3 axis, suggesting that inhibition of MALAT1 as a potential target for endothelial injury therapy for DM.

RESUMO

Currently, statins are the first-line therapies for dyslipidemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, however, their hypolipidemic effects have not been satisfactory. We performed a meta-analysis to compare lipid-lowering efficacy and safety of ezetimibe and statin combination therapy with double-dose statin monotherapy in patients with high cardiovascular risk. Fourteen studies involving 3105 participants were included in the final analysis; 1558 (50.18%) participants received ezetimibe and statin combination therapy and 1547 (49.82%) received double-dose statin monotherapy. Eight studies reported the percentages of changes in several lipid parameters from baseline to endpoint in both groups. Lipid parameters changed more significantly in patients coadministered with ezetimibe and statin (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C]: MD = -9.39, 95% CI -13.36 to -5.42; non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [non-HDL-C]: MD = -10.36, 95% CI -14.23 to -6.50; total cholesterol [TC]: MD = -8.11, 95% CI -10.95 to -5.26; and triglyceride [TG]: MD = -5.96, 95% CI -9.12 to -2.80), with moderate to high heterogeneity among the studies. Two out of fourteen studies investigated several different statins. Our subgroup analysis showed that, compared with double-dose atorvastatin monotherapy, ezetimibe and atorvastatin combination therapy significantly decreased LDL-C, non-HDL-C, TC, and TG levels by 14.16%, 14.01%, 11.06%, and 5.96%, respectively (p < 0.001). No significant difference was found in the incidence of laboratory-related adverse events (AEs) between statin combination therapy and monotherapy. Overall, ezetimibe and statin combination therapy significantly decreased LDL-C, non-HDL-C, and TC levels in patients with high cardiovascular risk, among which ezetimibe combined with atorvastatin had the best therapeutic effect. Compared with ezetimibe and statin combination therapy, double-dose statin monotherapy did not increase the risk of AEs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increasing trend of Caesarean section (CS) in childbirth has become a global public health challenge. Previous studies have proposed financial intervention strategies for reducing CS rates by limiting caesarean delivery on maternal request (CDMR). This study synthesizes such strategies while evaluating their effectiveness. METHODS: The sources of data for this study are Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL. The publication period included in this study is from January 1991 to November 2018. The financial intervention strategies are divide into two categories: healthcare provider interventions and patient interventions. Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies - of Interventions (ROBINS-I) was employed to assess the risk of bias of included studies. The outcome of each study was evaluated with Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) through the GRADEpro Guideline Development Tool software. RESULTS: Nine studies were included in this systematic review: five with high certainty evidence (HCE), three with moderate certainty evidence (MCE), and one with low certainty evidence (LCE). Of the nine studies, seven are centered on the effect of provider-side interventions. Three of the HCE studies found that the diagnosis-related group payment system, risk-adjusted capitation, and equalizing fee for both facilities and physicians were effective intervention strategies. One HCE and one MCE study showed that only equalizing facility fees between vaginal and CS deliveries in healthcare service settings had no significant effect on reducing the CS rate. The MCE study showed that case payment had a negative effect on reducing the CS rates. One LCE study revealed that the effect of a global budget system was uncertain, and one HCE and one MCE study focused on combining both provider and patient-side interventions. However, equalizing fees for vaginal and CS deliveries and a co-payment policy for CDMRs failed to reduce the CS rate. CONCLUSIONS: The effectiveness of risk-adjusted payment methods appears promising and should be the subject of further research. Financial interventions should consider stakeholders' characteristics, especially the personal interests of doctors. Finally, high-quality randomized control trials and comparative studies on different financial intervention methods are needed to confirm or refute previous studies' outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Lipid peroxidation entails major quality degradation in omega-3 (ω-3) fatty-acid-fortified surimi-like meat products upon storage. Currently, the use of label-friendly alternatives to synthetic antioxidants is encouraged in the industry. Hence, we aimed to examine the applicability of the hurdle-technology concept, using an 80% (v/v) ethanol solution to obtain rosemary extracts (REs) containing substantial amounts of polyphenol, and dry ice (DI) which can create a cryogenic environment, on the physicochemical stabilities of ω-3 fatty-acid (FA)-fortified meat products after manufacturing and storage periods. The polyphenolic profiles of the REs were also investigated. RESULTS: Carnosol and rosmarinic acid are major phenolic components in REs. Furthermore, DI addition during the chopping procedure increased (P < 0.05) whiteness values and hardness of products, while total ω-3 and ω-6 FAs were relatively well preserved (P < 0.05) in products with flaxseed oil premixed with RE. During 14-day storage at 4 °C, combined treatment with RE and DI decreased (P < 0.05) thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels and the centrifugation loss of products. Single or combined treatment with RE and/or DI decreased (P < 0.05) TBARS levels in products after 60 days of storage at -20 °C. CONCLUSION: Due to the antioxidant-polyphenol profile of REs and a possible oxygen exclusion of DI treatment under atmospheric pressure during food manufacturing, application of the hurdle-technology concept, using treatment with both RE and DI, can reduce lipid peroxidation and maintain a greater water-holding capacity of ω-3 FA-fortified meat products upon storage. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Low-fat meat products always have harder texture, lower juiciness, and worse flavor. Due to their higher water-holding, water absorption, and organic molecule absorption, chia seeds (CHIA) have been applied in powders, nutrition bars, breads, and cookies. Hence, the objectives of this study were to: (1) analyze the nutritional compositions in CHIA; and (2) look for the possible application of CHIA on restructured ham-like products. CHIA has high amounts of α-linolenic acid, crude polysaccharides, and also contains essential amino acids, minerals, and polyphenols. Regarding processing properties of CHIA, a combination of CHIA and carrageenan (CA) increased (p<0.05) production yield of restructured ham-like products. A scanning electron microscope observation indicated that CHIA and CA addition can assist an emulsification in this ham-like product. Addition of 0.5% CA and 1.0% CHIA in this ham-like product showed the similar overall acceptance as products with added fat. Following storage at 4°C, higher (p<0.05) purge and centrifugation losses, as well as hardness of this ham-like product can be improved by adding CHIA and CA. CHIA addition also resulted in lower (p<0.05) lipid and protein oxidation, especially a 1.0% addition. In summary, due to both nutritional addition and improvements on physicochemical and sensorial properties of restructured ham-like products, CHIA seeds have great potential on the development of healthy and good-quality meat products.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of institutional and policy interventions on reducing the rate of cesarean delivery on maternal request (CDMR) in Wenzhou, China. Institutional interventions included health education, painless delivery introduction, and doula care. Additionally, a series of health policies were developed by the Chinese central and local governments to control cesarean section rates, mostly through controlling CDMR rates. We conducted a pre-/post-intervention study using 131,312 deliveries between 2006 and 2014 in three tertiary-level public hospitals in Wenzhou, China. Chi-square tests and predictive models were used to examine changes in the CDMR rate before and after institutional and policy interventions. After institutional interventions were introduced, the overall CDMR rate increased from 15.76% to 16.34% (p = 0.053), but the average annual growth rate (AAGR) of the overall CDMR rate quickly declined from 20.11% to -4.30%. After policy interventions were introduced, the overall CDMR rate, the AAGR of the overall CDMR rate, and the probability of performing CDMR declined. Further, the overall probability of a woman undergoing CDMR decreased in all three age groups (group one: <24; group two: 24-34; group three: >34) after institutional and policy interventions. These results show that institutional and policy interventions can reduce the CDMR rate. Additionally, the CDMR rate should be included in hospitals' performance assessment matrix to reduce the CDMR rate further.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The meat of spent hens is hard to use owing to its small amount and poor quality. A washing process to remove sarcoplasmic proteins and other impurities can prolong the shelf life of surimi-like products. Owing to the benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs), functional foods fortified with ω-3 PUFAs are increasingly being marketed. Hence, in this study, ω-3 FA-fortified chicken surimi was manufactured, and how to ameliorate its lipid peroxidation during frozen storage was investigated. RESULTS: A 0.10% (w/v) solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) instead of distilled water in the third washing step decreased (P < 0.05) myofibrillar protein loss and moisture content of spent hen breast protein recoveries. Oil droplets in fish, flaxseed or soybean oil-added chicken surimi were well distributed. Moreover, flaxseed oil addition increased (P < 0.05) total ω-3 FAs and ω-3/ω-6 FA ratio, while only fish oil provided long-chain PUFAs. Oil addition decreased (P < 0.05) hardness and gumminess of chicken surimi, while flaxseed oil resulted in more (P < 0.05) yellow surimi than fish and soybean oil. Fish oil-added samples showed higher (P < 0.05) lipid oxidation than flaxseed or soybean oil-added samples under -15 to -10 °C storage, but α-tocopherol addition ameliorated it. CONCLUSION: A novel semi-manufactured chicken surimi product with nutritional benefits could be developed by fortification with fish or flaxseed oil.

RESUMO

A simple and fast micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) method was developed to investigate phospholipids isolated from human high-density lipoproteins (HDL). To optimize the MEKC conditions, several factors including bile salt concentration and organic modifier concentration in the separation buffer as well as temperature have been examined. The optimal separation buffer chosen was a mixture of 50 mM bile salts, 30% v/v 1-propanol and 10 mM sodium phosphate (pH 8.5). The applied voltage and temperature selected were 25 kV and 40°C, respectively. Meanwhile, high-salt stacking has been performed for sample pre-concentration to enhance peak sensitivity. Several factors including organic modifier concentration and salt concentration in the sample matrix as well as sample injection time have been optimized. The optimal sample buffer selected was a mixture of 100 mM NaCl and 20% 1-propanol, and the optimal sample injection time selected was 32 s under a pressure of 0.5 psi. Several phospholipid standards including lysophosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl choline (PC), sphingomyelin, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl inositol, phosphatidyl serine and phosphatidic acid have been studied using the optimal MEKC method. The MEKC profile of the mixed phospholipid standards showed good separation and reproducibility. The linear ranges for PC and sphingomyelin were 0.025-1.2 and 0.025-2.0 mg/mL, respectively. The concentration limits of detection of PC and sphingomyelin were 0.0156 and 0.0199 mg/mL, respectively. Using phosphatidic acid as an internal standard, precision and accuracy have been measured for PC and sphingomyelin. The intraday and interday quantitative analysis showed good results. The new MEKC method has been used to characterize native, in vitro oxidized and glycated human HDL phospholipids within 16 min. At absorbance 200 nm, two similar peaks were observed for native and oxidized HDL phospholipids, but three peaks were observed for glycated HDL phospholipids. Interestingly, at absorbance 234 nm, distinctively different MEKC profiles were observed for the three HDL phospholipids.

RESUMO

Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq., which can be used as a food ingredient, is grown throughout Southeast Asia and Australia. O. aristatus is frequently used for the treatment of renal inflammation, kidney stones and dysuria. The focus of the current work was to study the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of methanol, ethanol and water extracts from O. aristatus (abbreviated as MEOA, EEOA and WEOA, respectively). The evaluation of antioxidant activity was determined by total phenolics, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), oxygen-radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) assays. These assays demonstrated a relatively high antioxidant activity for MEOA and EEOA. These results revealed that EEOA had the most prominent inhibitory effect on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in RAW 264.7 cells. A high performance liquid chromatography profile indicated that MEOA and EEOA contained both ursolic acid and oleanolic acid. Moreover, ursolic acid significantly reduced NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Both EEOA and ursolic acid inhibited LPS-stimulated protein and mRNA expression of both inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in these cells. These results demonstrate that EEOA and its bioactive compound, ursolic acid, suppress LPS-induced NO and PGE(2) production by inhibiting ROS generation, along with reducing expression of iNOS and COX-2 in RAW 264.7 cells.
